36. Attrition War

Deep in the jungles of Naval Aviation Training, Doerr and his friends are on patrol as normal until they take pink sheet fire. They do what they can to avoid getting hit by returning fire. In the midst of the chaos, anyone hit by a pink sheet attracts a lurking enemy in the bushes. When it’s all over, Doerr does his ACE report but finds his friend calling out to him. Shooter unfortunately, has been hit three times and it doesn’t look good.

To educate the non-aviators for the IPC and FPC characters:

  • Initial Progress Check (IPC) . A special check given by the Operations Officer or his representative. A satisfactory IPC returns the student to normal syllabus flow. An UNSAT IPC results in an FPC.

  • Final Progress Check (FPC): A special check normally given by the Commanding Officer (CO) or Executive Officer (XO). The CO may designate, in writing, FPC duty to a qualified O-4 or above. This is only done if the CO or XO is unqualified or unavailable to instruct in the required stage. A satisfactory FPC returns the student to normal syllabus flow. An UNSAT FPC results in a TRB.

Failing a flight will result in a pink sheet and will most likely result in a progress check.
