1. The Claw
There are a few reasons why you’d be stuck waiting to fly. The term “standby” has varying meanings that gets thrown around because different generations of students give it different meanings. For a time when there were a lot of students but barely any instructors, you were put on a stand by board until an instructor was available. Another generation will recall being on standby where you’re just waiting on weather to get better and you’re literally standing by at the standby table. In the end, you’re still just waiting to maybe get cancelled.
Either way, standing by or waiting for your instructor to pick you up was common. For those Instructor Pilots (IPs) that were called in to fly on a short notice, they didn’t wanna fly with contact students because they didn’t want to deal with the newbies. It involved them putting more thought into the flight and they actually had to “teach.”
